Kolob Canyon, UT

We made our first venture into Zion National Park on Friday. The park is actually divided into two completely separate sections.  The main part of the park where all the famous places are located is to the south of us about 29 miles near the town of Springdale, UT. But, literally right down the street is the park within a park. Kolob Canyon has its own visitor center and an amazing 5 mile scenic drive. At the top is Timber Creek Overlook where you are just about level with Timber Top mountains at 7,700 ft. The drive up has a beautiful surprise at every turn and there are plenty of pull outs for photos.  The mountains are all part of the Colorado Plateau that was created when the tectonic shift took place. That shift moved 130,000 square miles of rock up as high as 10,000 feet above sea level.

Here's the first turn:
 and the second:
 and the third....

Then onward to the top:

It is so hard to convey the shear size of these mountains. Then back down and dinner in the RV.

The weather had been fantastic, just a sweatshirt or light jacket. Even at the top, the sun warmed everything. But, we woke up the next morning to this....
When you start a mile up, the weather is pretty unpredictable. That led to a quiet day in the RV, work on the computer and the fire place keeping us warm.

Sunday is off to Pipe Spring National Monument.
